JOSEPH
ANANIA
originally started out as a
teacher at the Phil Gushee Studio
in New York City. Phil Gushee was trained by Sanford Meisner
and William Esper at the Neighborhood Playhouse.
Joseph was rapidly given more responsibility, becoming
one
of the primary teachers for the studio. Working directly
with
Phil he helped develop a workshop specifically focusing
on
"the repetition exercise. Because of his keen eye for
directing
from a Meisner perspective, Joseph was soon given the
added responsibility of co-producing and co-directing
the final
scene showcase for the second year students' presentation
to industry professionals. Phil soon asked Joseph to become
his partner and form the Gushee/Anania studio where they
worked togetherfor 15 years.
Joseph's other training includes a B.S. in education with
a minor
in theater from Hunter College and completion of the Stella
Adler Conservatory three and one half year program, studying
with
Stella Adler, Ron Burrus and Pearl Pearson. He has also
taken additional acting technique courses from William
Hickey. His
acting career Includes film work, national network commercials
and New York theatre at such theatre companies as Perry
Street Theatre, Red Earth Theatre Company and Harold Clurman
Theatre performing lead roles in contemporary plays as
well
as plays by lonesco, Chekhov and Moliere. He was a founding
member of two theater companies in New York City: Inner
Visions Theatre Company and the Performers Ensemble. He
has
taught in New York since 1989.
