Joe originally started out as a teacher at the Phil Gushee Studio
in New York City, where he was also trained by him. Phil Gushee
was trained by Sanford Meisner and William Esper at the
Neighborhood Playhouse.

Joe was rapidly given more responsibility, becoming one
of the primary teachers for the studio. Working directly with
Phil he helped develop a workshop specifically focusing on
"the repetition exercise”. Because of his keen eye for directing
from a Meisner perspective, Joe was soon given the
added responsibility of co-producing and co-directing the final
scene showcase for students' presentation to industry
professionals. Phil soon asked Joe to become his partner
and form the Gushee/Anania studio where they worked together
for 15 years.

Joe’s other training includes a B.S. in education with a minor
in theater from Hunter College and completion of the Stella
Adler Conservatory three and one half year program,
studying with Stella Adler, Ron Burrus and Pearl Pearson. He
has also taken additional acting technique courses from William
Hickey. His acting career Includes work on The Soprano’s and
Law and Order, as well as films, national commercials and New
York theatre at such theatre companies as Perry Street Theatre,
Red Earth Theatre Company and Harold Clurman Theatre
performing lead roles in contemporary plays as well as plays by
lonesco, Chekhov and Moliere. He was a founding member of two
theater companies in New York City: Inner Visions Theatre
Company and the Performers Ensemble. He has taught in
New York since 1989.
